One of the most positive features of the Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet is the off days. During every two week period, you spend 11 days on the diet and 3 days off the diet. While this sounds mythical, it's actually a valid approach, and is one that is shared by another popular diet, the Cheat to Lose Diet.
The principle revolves around the hormone Leptin. Leptin is sometimes referred to as the weight loss hormone, because it helps regulate energy levels, and is increased naturally during periods of greater than average eating.
So the Fat Loss 4 Idiots approach depend on maximizing weight loss while Leptin levels are at their highest, which is immediately after the 3 off days. It does this by employing a very strict calorie-shifting approach to dieting. Calorie shifting takes advantage of the fact that your body doesn't immediately adjust to decreases in calorie intake. That is, by throwing in low-calorie meals or low-calorie days after high-calories meals or days, your body will still attempt to burn calories as it did on those high calorie days, resulting in more rapid weight loss.
So during the early part of each two week period, your body is at maximum fat-burning potential, but after a week, your body begins to level out. To help keep your motivation high and to keep your body from entering starvation or conservation mode during the diet, you are permitted 3 off days at the end of each two-week period. These off days stave off cravings and increase your body's levels of leptin.
This unique approach is favored by many dieters; but still others are quick to lump it into the "fad diet" category. While the verdict is still out on the long-term benefits of the calorie shifting approach, the short term results can't be ignored.
